Rotorua Activities
Oh! The smell
The first thing to strike your nostrils is the ever present pungent sulphar smell in Rotorua. This is caused by the geothermal activity that permeates the entire city.
Rotoura is a caldron of thermal activity. Surrounded by 18 pristine lakes that were once the epi-center of numerous volcanos, the surrounding earth bubbles and boils with hot mud and steam seeps from cracks in the roads. Visiting one of the thermal parks such as the immense Whakarewarewa is an absolute must-do for any visitor to Rotoura.
Rotoura also has the most vibrant Maori culture of anywhere in New Zealand. The best way to get close to this wonderful friendly cutlure is to experience a Kapa Haka group and try a Hangi (food cooked in the ground). Tamaki Maori Village is perhaps the best experience for that.
There are loads of other activities for all budgets in Rotoura including epic mountain biking, exploring the lake by kayak, paddle board, paddle steamer or luxury catamaran and of course the white water rafting on the nearby Kaituna River is world famous.
