Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and with a population of close to 2 million is the largest most isolated city in the world. Locals choose to live in Perth for it’s “lifestyle” - relaxed, uncrowded beaches, and very mild winters (summers can be very hot however).
The main city sprawls along a flat coastal plain, centred along the Swan River and bounded by the Darling Scarp to the east and the Indian Ocean coastline in the west. Spring (Sep-Nov) and Autumn (Mar-May) are ideal times in which to visit Perth. Spring (particularly October / November periods) is perhaps the very best to see the sights as after a decent winter's rainfall, the famous wildflowers around Kings Park and the Avon Valley bloom splendidly.
Perth boasts some of the country's best beaches, which are ideal for swimming during the warmer months. One of the best day trips in Perth is to visit the nature reserve off the coast of Fremantle, Rottnest Island. There is a huge variety of wildlife to see (including the famous Quokka) and opportunities to see whales, dolphins and fur seals off the coast, depending on the season. Another (closer, cheaper but smaller) option is to visit Penguin Island, home of the "Little Penguins" or "Fairy Penguins", located 5 min off the coast of Rockingham. The wines produced in the region of Margaret River are regarded amongst the best in the world.
