Port Stephens Dolphin Watching Day trip from Sydney

A day out in the beautiful Port Stephens area. Cruise the harbour on a dolphin spotting boat trip, play on stunning beaches, sand slide down huge dunes and 4WD on the beach. If you love nature and adventure, then this is the trip for you!

2 hours north of Sydney the Port Stephens area is simply paradise with over 26 incredible white sand beaches to choose from. It is no wonder that this trip gets booked out well in advance.

On our way to Nelson Bay in the heart of the Port Stephens area we travel north from Sydney over the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and up the New South Wales coastline made up of stunning golden beaches that have made Australia so famous. Nelson Bay is a cute town with some quaint local shops for you to explore before we head out to sea for a dolphin watching trip.

We are in search of over 150 incredibly playful bottlenose dolphins who call Port Stephens home. Between June and October there is the option to upgrade to our whale watching trip which goes a little further out to sea to catch the migrating Humpback whales renowned for their playfulness and acrobatics. If you are keen to get a little closer to the dolphins the boat comes equiped with a boom net to lower you into the sea.

Once back ashore you have your own time to hang out, sunbake on the glorious Stockton Beach, take a swim, or optionally try sand boarding down the huge Anna Bay sand dunes. Accessed by large 4WD the Anna Bay dunes are some of the biggest you will experience anywhere in the world and an awesome sand boarding challenge on purpose made boards. Alternatively, there are optional camel or 4WD sand buggy rides available.

This trip is one of our most popular and often gets booked out well in advance. The playful bottlenose dolphins are so amusing and we highly recommend getting into the water if conditions allow. While sleeping the hangovers away on the golden sand of Stockton Beach is hard to turn down we also recommend you head out sand boarding. These dunes are immense and such a buzz!!

    A Great Day!

I had a great day at Port Stephens, last saturday. First we went to an amazing lookout point and after that the dolphin watch cruise. This was amazing, especially the opportunity to sit in the net.

After that we did the sandboarding what was great. Also the traffic was well organised and the busdriver George want really to show us the nicest places.

    Cruise Was Lovely

Personally I was only in it for the dolphins - cruise was lovely and happy to say not part of the 2% that doesn't get to see any.

But vegging out on a terrace with a nibble and a drink at the beach while co-travelers went up the dunes for a mouth full of sand ;-) was a perfect and relaxing end to the day.

    Very Lovely Day

My partner and I went on the Jervis Bay day trip and we really enjoyed. Food provided was delicious and the guide was very helpful and entertaining. He always made sure everyone was ok and enjoying their time.

We also went on the dolphin cruise and we got to see few dolphins who came right under our boat and a mum with her calf too. Very lovely day.
