Hippy chic, trendy, bohemian - lots of funny words used to describe the awesome and unique Byron Bay at the very top of New South Wales.
Byron Bay is made up of a picturesque town nestled right on a beautiful long white sand surf beach. The surfers and backpackers in their vans mix comfortably with the visiting city-slickers staying in the boutique accommodation and resident artisans. There is an unusual concentration of creative types sipping their organic coffee while chewing over mung beans that gives the town a real alternative hippy vibe. But don't be fooled this is not grungy town with good accommodation prices and fine dining well up there.
Byron Bay is nearly always good for a swim year round with it's temperate climate. At the Southerly end the beach is sheltered and headland juts out to produce Australia's most easterly point. The large Byron Bay lighthouse is iconic and worth a hike. Also hidden around the corner of the headland is the beautiful Wategos beach.
A trip to Byron Bay should be capped off with a kayak tour or surf lesson to get the most out of your time there - and feel the so called Byron bay vibe.
